Salinas, Monterey County
John Steinbeck was born in Salinas in 1902 and set East of Eden and other novels in the valley around it. The Victorian house where he grew up still stands on Central Avenue. Two blocks away, at the head of Main Street, the National Steinbeck Center holds his manuscripts, letters and the camper truck he drove across the country for Travels with Charley.
